Submission Guidelines

Choosing a Topic

The purpose of The Herd is to create an archive of student experience and creativity. The topic you choose to cover through your submission should be meaningful and applicable to your life as a young person in society. Some examples of topics could be:

 

  • Mental and physical health 

  • Speculation about the future of the economy or society  

  • Review of politics 

  • A brief history covering a specific concept or event

Volume 3 submissions must relate to the theme: "2020 changed me..."

You submission should somehow incorporate how public events and personal experiences of the past year have led you to evolve as an artist, student or as an individual in general.

General Criteria

Submissions that do not meet the following criteria will be rejected without review. Please see field-specific criteria on the next page for more information.  

  

  1. All work must be completed during your time as a student in University, College or another form of recognized educational institution.  

  2. All work must be completely original. All external material must be cited using accepted format (MLA, Chicago, etc.).   

  3. If you have submitted your work for review by another publishing organization, you must disclose this in the application form. 

  4. Any criticism towards groups, organizations or individuals must be mindful and in good faith.   

  5. Any work created with the aim of seriously offending, marginalizing or discriminating towards any group or individual will be immediately rejected.  

  6. Topics of a mature nature (pertaining to sex, violence etc.) must be negotiated mindfully and professionally.   

  7. Any imagery or description of nudity or sexual activity must be negotiated mindfully and professionally.  

Field-Specific Criteria

Other Submissions

All other submissions must meet the following criteria:  

  

Work must be completely original, all externally sourced media must be cited using an accepted format (MLA, Chicago etc.)  

 

Pieces created in bad faith towards a group or individual will be automatically rejected. - Pieces must be available for viewing digitally  

Visual Submissions
Written Submissions

All written submissions will ideally fit into one of the following formatting categories* and meet specific criteria: Please submit in PDF.  

  

Opinion: Your own mindful and original perspective, argued and supported. Word count (1000-2500).  

Feature: Focus piece on a small business, organization or other relevant group (500-2500) 

Creative: Fictional account of experience. Word count (500-2500).  

Humour: Tasteful comedy and satirical pieces. Word count (250-1000).  

Report/Article: Non-partisan, evidence-based reporting or reviewing. (1000-2500). 

Short: Maximum 250 words.  

  

 

Work must be completely original, all external facts and information must be cited using an accepted format (MLA, Chicago etc.)  

 

 

Pieces written in bad faith towards a group or individual will be automatically rejected.

All visual submissions will ideally fit into one of the following formatting categories* and meet specific criteria:  

  

Paint/Draw: Photographed in as high quality as is possible.  

Photography: High quality, edited.  

Mixed Media: Photographed in as high quality as possible.  

Digital Art/Video: High quality, edited. Sound must be free from copyright restriction.  

Performance: Captured in as high quality as is possible.  

Sculpture/Craft/DIY: Photographed in as high quality as possible.  

  

Work must be completely original, all externally sourced media must be cited using an accepted format (MLA, Chicago etc.)  

 

 

Pieces displayed in bad faith towards a group or individual will be automatically rejected.
